How the number is made
Identical standards are native (0). Fanatec QR1 with QR2 in either direction, and an Ascher 70 mm wheel with Simucube in either direction, are first-party or included hubs (1). Logitech and Thrustmaster do not cross to other standards (3). Every remaining cross-brand pair is a third-party adapter (2).
Electronics, paddle pinouts and wireless hubs are not in the code. A mechanical match can still need a separate USB or coil connection.

After the wheel bolts on
A matched release does not size the cockpit. A 15 Nm base on a wheel stand still twists, even when the wheel clicks on cleanly.

Questions
Can a QR2 wheel go on a QR1 base?
Not directly: QR1 and QR2 do not latch together. Fanatec sells a QR2 Base-Side for bases with an exchangeable QR1 and a QR1 Wheel-Side for bases with a fixed QR1 shaft, so the code is 1, a first-party hub. Check that the wheel lists the base as supported.
Why are Logitech and Thrustmaster closed?
Their wheel-side connectors are not sold as a pattern other brands bolt to. Crossing them is not a spacer problem.
Does Simucube accept a 70 mm wheel?
Yes, through the hub pattern those wheels and bases already share. That is a first-party style match, not a random spacer.
